Prospects to Watch - March Madness 2023

Welcome back to my annual prospect tracker for March Madness. This list is a rolling tracker of players to watch for either the 2023 NBA Draft or beyond, as well as other professional basketball prospects (G League, overseas, etc.). This list is NOT complete as of Tuesday, March 14.

A number of Alabama players are going to get looks at some looks at the next level. Two guys who stand at the top of that list are presumptive top-three pick Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney, a top-75 guy from the 20

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Chet Holmgren

We’re finally coming down the home stretch of the 2022 NBA Draft cycle and I couldn’t be more excited. That means we are going to take a look at the top of the draft, the players expected to hear their names called first.

Interestingly, this is a position that I couldn’t make a final decision on until the last possible second. I truly believe that Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren and Auburn forward Jabari Smith are the 1A and 1B in this draft class.

So what made me settle on Holmgren as the top gu

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Jabari Smith

Auburn forward Jabari Smith is the favorite to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Even though he’s my No. 2 overall prospect, it’s well-deserved for a class I truly believe is a 1A/1B class, with Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren holding the top spot on my board.

Smith is a 6-foot-10 forward with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, averaging 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, two assists and 2.1 stocks per game while shooting 42% from downtown on 5.5 attempts per game. In h

2022 NBA DRAFT BIG BOARD

Here we go. There are 222 players ranked in this iteration of my 2022 NBA Draft big board. But before we start, I have a few notes.

This class is one of the most unpredictable I’ve seen in years. I spent so much time splitting hairs between guys that could end up being deep sleepers and trying to slot as many guys into a tier as possible. Speaking of tiers, I have split my board into 12 different tiers with the aim of narrowing my margin of error on a prospect. The first tier is my top-four guy

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Julian Champagnie, Keon Ellis, Lucas Williamson, Jamal Cain

Author’s note: I wrote these evaluations for a piece I wrote for Hot Hot Hoops. This edition includes the pure scouting reports for these players, not the Miami Heat-affiliated notes that are in the full article. Check out the full article for more in-depth breakdowns of these guys.

Williamson is an intriguing guard prospect standing at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds. Williamson averaged 13.7 points, five rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game in his final season at Loyola-Chicago, shooting 44% fr

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Gabriele Procida

As we continue on this trek of breaking down the international 2022 NBA Draft class, the 20-year-old Gabriele Procida makes for one of the more interesting evaluations from overseas. Procida is a 6-foot-7 wing with some true shot-making potential and is somebody who could transform into a three-and-D piece for the right team.

Procida averaged seven points and three rebounds per game, shooting 38.3% from downtown this past season in just 18 minutes per game. This is Procida’s second straight sea

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Josh Minott

Last season, the San Antonio Spurs turned heads when they selected Josh Primo with the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Primo was a beneficiary of a great pre-draft process, with teams rating him higher and higher as the weeks leading up to the draft continued to pass. However, Primo wasn’t anything outstanding in college. The Spurs took him for a combination of his character, elite physical traits and the ability to get Primo in their development system as soon as possible. There are se

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Patrick Baldwin Jr.

If Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr. is selected in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft, he may have the worst resume of any first-round player in the last 20 years. I was a huge fan of Baldwin’s decision to play with his father this past season… until I saw the caliber of play of his teammates. Ultimately, Baldwin’s Milwaukee team won just 10 of 32 games and Baldwin stopped playing for the team after just 11 games. Baldwin, a top-five high school recruit, averaged 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds w

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Dom Barlow

The Overtime Elite started up this season and all eyes were on Jean Montero as a potential first-rounder in a class full of unknowns that was going to shock everyone and open up the world of basketball. That… is unlikely to happen, as Montero would be lucky to hear his name called on draft night at all at this point. That isn’t a slight at Montero, just an indication of where his stock seems to be trending. However, there is one player who stood out every step of the way throughout the pre-draft

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - TyTy Washington Jr.

There’s a thought process among league officials that Kentucky doesn’t get the best out of its guards at the collegiate level. Nobody expected Devin Booker to be what he is today. Tyrese Maxey went 21st overall. Tyler Herro went in the end of the lottery and became a Sixth Man of the Year. B.J. Boston went No. 51 overall. Immanuel Quickley and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander both went further in the draft than they should’ve in their respective classes. The list goes on. Will TyTy Washington Jr. be the

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Trevor Keels

While covering the ACC this season, I quickly fell in love with the prospect class that Duke brought in. Trevor Keels is another favorite of mine, despite the fact that he has some glaring holes in his game. Keels was one of the last players to make his decision to fully commit to the draft, reportedly not having his mind made up just hours before the deadline to withdraw.

Keels averaged 11.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 41.9% from the floor and 31.2%

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - E.J. Liddell

At the end of the pre-draft period, all NBA Draft early entrants must make a decision about their future. Should players stay in the draft that only has 60 total spots and over 100 qualified players but for a chance at a huge salary? Or should players go back to school and earn some money under the new NIL (Names, Image and Likeness) deals while improving their stock, but faced with more uncertainty? The answer differs on the person, but one guy who definitely took scouts’ advice to heart in the

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Ismael Kamagate

We’re finally touching on the international group of potential draftees in this class and I couldn’t be more excited. This is a really interesting group of players that doesn’t have anyone that is a consensus lottery talent, with the closest being Serbia’s Nikola Jovic or the NBL’s Ousmane Dieng, but there are tons of guys that have the chance to be either draft-and-stash guys, late first-to-early-second guys or both.

Ismael Kamagate is a guy that I would expect to be selected in the late first

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - MarJon Beauchamp

Out of all the guys in this G League Ignite draft class, MarJon Beauchamp is the one that excites me most… well, outside of Dyson Daniels. Still, Beauchamp is a tantalizing wing prospect that should translate well to the next level. In his only season with the Ignite, Beauchamp averaged 15.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 stocks while shooting 57.1% from the floor on over 11 shot attempts per game.

Beauchamp is 6-foot-6 with a near-7-foot wingspan and can score both inside and out, s

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Jaden Hardy

I won’t lie to you, Jaden Hardy of the G League Ignite is one of the hardest evaluations in this class. I constantly have teetered on whether I buy into him as a player or if I would steer clear due to his frustrating tendencies. It also doesn’t help that the G League Ignite only has one year’s worth of players playing in the NBA, making it hard to get a read on any player hailing from the program.

But ultimately, Jalen Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix — the G League’s class

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Dalen Terry

I’ve spent the better part of the day writing about my favorite players in the 2022 draft class and Arizona’s Dalen Terry is no exception. Terry is a 6-foot-7 wing that has a multitude of skills complete with a near-7-foot-1 wingspan and weighs in at about 195 pounds. In his sophomore season at Arizona, Terry averaged eight points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 50.2% from the floor and 36.4% from deep.

The first thing to know about Terry is that he’s a menace

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Walker Kessler

Another one of my favorite players in the 2022 draft class, Walker Kessler is an absolute force to be reckoned with. I didn’t think anything of Kessler when he attended UNC, seeing as he barely got any run and wasn’t given much freedom, but that completely changed when he switched over to the Tigers.

In his only season at Auburn, Kessler averaged 11.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and… 5.7 stocks per game. Obviously, Kessler averaged the most amount of stocks/blocks in the entire draft class, along with

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Jamaree Bouyea

I watched more WCC basketball this year than I ever have before due to the sheer amount of exciting talent that the conference boasts, from top pick Chelt Holmgren to lottery hopeful Jalen Williams, there has been far more interest in that league as the competition level has raised. One guy that continuously stood out to me was somebody I should’ve taken notice of earlier: San Francisco’s Jamaeree Bouyea, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard that should absolutely be taken in the second round of this yea

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Michael Foster Jr.

Standing at 6-foot-8 with a 6-foot-11 wingspan, Michael Foster Jr. of the G League Ignite is the class’s most underrated player this year. Having averaged 14.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, two assists and three stocks per game, Foster is a player that still may go undrafted this year, but with his combination of age, athleticism and ability to be everywhere on the court, he should be in heavy consideration for the second round.

Foster cleans up everything at and around the rim, getting offensive board

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - A.J. Griffin

There are tons of question marks in this draft class and far too few surefire selections. One of the biggest mystery men in this draft is none other than Duke’s A.J. Griffin, a former five-star recruit that averaged 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds while hitting 49.3% of his shots from the floor and 44.7% of his 4.1 three-point attempts per game.

Opinions are ultimately split on Griffin. There was a time at one point in the season when Griffin was getting top-five buzz, which seems highly unlikely

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Aminu Mohammed

Aminu Mohammed played for a bad Georgetown team this season but is definitely a diamond in the rough to keep an eye on. Mohammed is a 6-foot-5, 209-pound guard that plays more like a power forward, with an interesting set of skills that could be morphed into a strong defender.

Starting with Mohammed’s strengths, the Georgetown product showed some interesting offensive potential. He’s a huge fan of the turnaround jumper in the paint, doing a good job of getting the shot around in a short amount

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Jeremy Sochan

In this edition of the 2022 NBA Draft Breakdown series, I’ll look at Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan, a guy that isn’t being talked about as a big draft riser as much as he should, because he has real top-10 aspirations. Entering the season, it wasn’t clear if Sochan would be a first-round guy, but he continuously leaped up boards, surpassing teammate Kendall Brown and moving up and up. If you don’t take my word for it, take the NBA’s, as Sochan is one of 16 players to receive a draft green room invitati

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Malaki Branham

Before the season, Ohio State guard Malaki Branham wasn’t on many radars as a potential one-and-done, but after averaging over 13 points a game, Branham is in lottery consideration. In his one and only season at Ohio State, the 6-foot-5.5 Branham averaged 13.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and two assists per game while shooting an outstanding 49.8% from the floor and 41.6% from deep along with an 83.3% rate from the charity stripe.

Branham has the potential to be an absolutely elite scorer at the next

2022 NBA Draft Breakdown - Mark Williams

After a brief hiatus, I’m back for the next edition of the 2022 NBA Draft Breakdown series, looking at Duke center Mark Williams, someone who displayed a tremendous frame at the NBA Combine.

Standing at 7-foot-2 in shoes at 242 pounds, Williams also boasts a 7-foot-6.5 wingspan and a hilariously long 9-foot-9 standing reach, 4 inches greater than the next-highest player who tested (Auburn’s Walker Kessler and Arizona’s Christian Koloko; the highest standing reach recorded at the G League Elite
